What is the use of the D-Dimer in DVT/PE? Which population is it best for?
Negative result excludes the presence of clots in low to moderate risk patients. (NPV > 99%). Best for young patients with low risk. Elderly patients (>85 yo) have a 10% chance of having a random elevated D-dimer.
