Explanation

To complete this lab:

  • Select the Ethernet 100/1000TX router with firewall capabilities. The dorm provides a connection to the Internet. You can increase security by using the router with a built-in firewall.
  • Connect the Ethernet router WAN port to the Internet (wall plate).
  • Connect the dorm computers to the Ethernet router LAN ports.
  • You will need an extra network cable. Choose the Cat5e cable.
  • Configure the Windows Firewall settings through Control Panel on each computer.

To set up the router, follow these steps:

  1. On the Shelf, expand the Routers
  2. Read the description for each device. Drag the Ethernet 100/1000TX router with firewall to the Bench.
  3. To connect the router, switch to the Back view of the router.
  4. Select the cable currently connected to the wall plate and drag it to a LAN Port on the router.
  5. On the left computer (Dorm-PC), switch to the Back view of the computer.
  6. Select the cable currently connected to the Ethernet PCI expansion card (lower port) and drag it to a LAN Port on the router.
  7. On the Shelf, expand the Cables
  8. Select the Cat5e RJ-45 cable. In the Selected Component window, drag a connector to the WAN port on the router.
  9. In the Selected Component window, drag the other connector to the port on the wall plate.
  10. To plug in the router, select the power adapter on the Shelf.
  11. In the Selected Component window, drag the DC power connector to the power port on the router.
  12. In the Selected Component window, drag the AC adapter end to the surge protector.
  13. Switch to the Front view of the router to verify power and network activity lights.
  14. Click the Windows icon on the left monitor (Dorm-PC).
  15. On Dorm-PC, open the command prompt and use the ipconfig /renew command to request new TCP/IP information from the router.
  16. Click the networking icon in the Task Bar and select Open Network and Sharing Center. The network information map should indicate an active connection to the FirewallNetwork and the Internet.
  17. Repeat steps 15 and 16 on Dorm-PC2.

 

To configure Windows Firewall, complete the following steps on each computer (Dorm-PC and Dorm-PC2):

  1. Click Start/Control Panel.
  2. Click System and Security.
  3. Click Windows Firewall.
  4. To enable the firewall, click Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
  5. Enable or disable the firewall as required for each network profile.
  6. Click OK.
  7. To allow a program through the firewall, click Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall.
  8. Click Change settings.
  9. To configure an exception for a common program, check the box next to the program name.
  10. To configure an exception for an uncommon program, click the Allow another program…
  11. Select the program from the list and click Add, then check the box for each required network profile.

 

Click OK.
