and a disproportionately high RBC count. Iron deficiency usually has a low RBC count and rarely becomes microcytic until hemoglobin is <10 g/dL. Iron supplements offer no benefit for thalassemia minor as patients are usually not iron deficient. Treatment is reassurance with no specific therapy required."
