You are a network technician for a small corporate network. Several employees need to use authorized laptops while they are in the office. To permit a connection between the laptops and the wired network and the Internet, you need to create a wireless network.

Your task in this lab is to create a wireless network as follows:

  • Within the Networking Closet, select a wireless access point which meets the following criteria:
    • Transmission speeds up to 600 Mbps
    • Signal range of 300 ft. or more
    • Backwards compatible with other wireless standards which use the 2.4GHz frequency.
  • Install the wireless access point in the rack as follows:
    • Place the wireless access point on the shelf that is within the rack.
    • Select the correct cable to connect the wireless access point to Port 22 of the existing switch in the rack.
    • Provide power to the wireless access point through an outlet on the UPS or wall plate.
  • Configure the new laptop in the IT Administration office (named IT-Lap) to connect to the wireless network:
    • Slide the wireless switch on the front of the laptop to the on (I) position. This will enable the integrated wireless network interface card on the laptop.

Use the default settings as you connect IT-Lap to the wireless network, and save the wireless profile with the settings as listed above.

Explanation

To complete this lab:

  • In the Networking Closet:
    • Place the 802.11b/g/n wireless access point on the rack shelf. The 802.11b/g/n wireless access point has transmission speeds up to 600 Mbps, has a signal range of 300 ft. or more, and is backwards compatible with other wireless standards which use the 2.4GHz frequency.
    • Connect an Ethernet twisted pair cable to the Ethernet port on the wireless access point and the Ethernet Port 22 on the existing switch in the rack.
    • Provide power to the wireless access point.
  • In the IT Administration office:
    • Slide the wireless switch on the front of the laptop to the on (I) position. This will enable the integrated wireless network interface card on the laptop.
    • Connect the laptop to the TrendNet-BGN wireless network.
    • Create a wireless network profile while connecting to the wireless network.

Complete the following steps:

  1. On the Shelf, expand the Wireless Access Points
  2. Read the device descriptions to identify the correct wireless access point. Drag the wireless access point to the rack shelf.
  3. Switch to the back view of the rack.
  4. To plug in the wireless access point, expand the Cables category on the Shelf.
  5. Select the power adapter.
  6. In the Selected Component window, drag the DC power connector to the port on the wireless access point.
  7. In the Selected Component window, drag the AC adapter end to an empty outlet on the rack’s UPS.
  8. To connect the wireless access point to the switch, select the Cat5e cable on the Shelf.
  9. In the Selected Component window, drag a connector to the Ethernet port on the back of the wireless access point.
  10. Switch to the front of the rack.
  11. In the Selected Component window, drag the other Cat5e cable connector to Port 22 on the switch.
  12. To enable the integrated wireless network interface on the laptop in the IT Administration office to the wireless network, go to the IT Administration office.
  13. Click the wireless switch on the front of the laptop. This will slide the switch to the on (I) position.
  14. To connect IT-Lap to the wireless network, click the Windows icon on the laptop’s screen.
  15. Click the networking icon in the Task Bar and click the TrendNet-BGN wireless network.
  16. Ensure that the Connect automatically checkbox is selected and click Connect.
