-Yucatan Peninsula: 500 AD/C-1200 peak period-only ancient civilization to arise in low land tropics-practiced migratory subsistence agriculture: growing food to support friends and fam; had to move around to do it b/c 1)the Yucatan has limestone which hasn’t developed good layers of topsoil2)lowlands-Mayans were excellent math maticians; invented concept of zero -Mayan Calendar is more accurate than ours
