How can the functional load of linguistic elements affect language change?

– High functional load if a lot of minimal pairs exist (ex. /ae/-/e/) -> Minimal pairs: words are distinguished by only one sound (man -men) -> If many minimal pairs exist -> will resist change (ex. /ae/ -/e/)- Major factor in decision whether a change takes place or not
